Ask Anaheim Police Capt. Joe Vargas why he became a cop and he doesn’t hesitate: “My Dad.”

His father, Jose Vargas, was Santa Ana Police Department’s first Hispanic Affairs Officer and one of Orange County’s most beloved community leaders. He was credited with creating trust between the Latino community and the police department at a time “when police officers were to be feared,” his son said.

In many ways, Joe Vargas modeled his 30-year law enforcement career after his father’s. But when he retires in May, Joe Vargas will leave behind a legacy of police and community innovation all his own.

Can Twitter help sell 15,000 raffle tickets to benefit Irvine schools? The Irvine Public Schools Foundation issued the challenge shortly after launching its 7th Annual Dream Stakes Home Raffle.

If the events of last week are any indication, the answer is yes.

The foundation partnered with @rochelleveturis, @rental_living and @premiddleage for a cocktail party and Tweetup last Wednesday at The Park at Irvine Spectrum.

After the meeting, he sent a short-but-passionate email reacting to how the state budget crisis is impacting his teachers. The response surprised him. His note spread quickly. A few weeks later, Pandit found himself reading it in front of a packed school board meeting.

And now, in between studying for Advanced Placement tests, he is playing a key role in organizing the “I-Jam for Teachers Family Festival,” the biggest charity concert event in Irvine school history.

Harrison Steed

The Orange County Register published an outstanding profile today of JSerra’s record-setting high jumper Harrison Steed.

The Berkeley-bound athlete told columnist Steve Fryer that his track-and-field ambitions extend beyond college to the Olympics.

“That’s always in the back of my mind,” he said. “It’s definitely a goal to get there some day.”

Prominent Orange County attorney Wayne Gross was quoted in a Los Angeles Times story today about the stock-options back-dating trial of ex-KB Homes CEO Bruce Karatz.

Gross commented on the value of influential character witnesses.

“High profile character witnesses never concerned me,” Gross told The Times.

JSerra Catholic High School invests in the futures of students as they prepare for their next steps in college, the working world and life in general, writes JSerra’s CEO, Frank Talarico, in his monthly Capistrano Dispatch newspaper column.

“That’s why we’re so excited about our newest venture – a pre-med professional magnet program that will engage and challenge students interested in medical and healthcare careers,” he writes.

The program was also the lead feature story on a recent edition of “Real Orange,” KOCE-TV’s evening news program.

Last year was a big year for Anaheim Police Department veteran canine officer Cisko and his partner, officer Brian Bonczkiewicz.Cisko

The duo busted dozens of bad guys and seized more than $550,000 in drugs and drug money.

For their accomplishments, the American Legion honored Cisko, a German Shepherd, with the meritorious canine award and Bonczkiewicz with a similar award.

The awards lead the latest installment of the Orange County Register-Anaheim Bulletin’s bimonthly “Behind the Badge” column.
